American Horror Story: Asylum
Season 2 Episode 9 “The Coat Hanger”
Warning: What follows is not only SPOILERS for last night’s episode but my opinion on certain aspects of it.
“It’s a shame so many people have such a negative reaction to something so natural. Was that the first time you touched yourself?”
“No, I skinned a cat. It was already dead.”
What an awesome way to start out another freaky episode of what has become one of my favorite shows. Does that make me just a little crazy myself? Maybe, but then I don’t want to be sane. Here’s a few scatterbrain thoughts on last nights trip to the loony bin:
While it is almost gratifying to see Sister Jude treated with the same hostility and looked down on with the same contempt and disbelief as she treated all her patients, we, the viewer, are stuck knowing just how unjust her situation is. What a conundrum for us. Jessica Lange has for two seasons played two characters we all love to hate and hate to love. I cannot wait to see how she behaves as a patient now. And a serious thank you must be said to Jude for destroying that record I was getting way to familiar with.
Joseph Fiennes’ character, The Monseigneur, is as creepy as he pretends to be righteous. His personal ambitions far outweigh any good intentions he has for Briarcliff, however he is still a delight whenever he shows up. Shout out to the as always amazing Ian McShane for nailing that priest to a bloody cross!
Though it took me perhaps a bit longer than it should have to realize why this episode is called “The Coat Hanger”, Sarah Paulson’s Lana Winters (tried) to perform an impromptu abortion on herself because she is (GASP) pregnant with crazy Dr. Theadson’s aka Bloody Face’s baby. And we all know who he is. (Dylan MCDermott for those who are a bit slower on the uptake).
And here’s a bit of trivia for you. Which actress is threatened by someone who wants to skin them alive in two different roles? Why Brooke Smith, who guest stars here as Dylan McDermott’s therapist and also played a would-be victim of Buffalo Bill’s in Silence of the Lambs.
And if all this isn’t enough for one episode to handle, the aliens are back! Yes, Dr. Arden was able to summon them by, hopefully, temporarily, killing Kit. Now I know I wasn’t the only one who couldn’t believe that actually worked AND brought Grace back. Who’s excited to see what she’s carrying?
So, who wants to tell me their thoughts on this excessively wacko episode? Also as a little treat here’s the preview for episode 2×10 “The Name Game”, airing January 2nd. Too long to wait if you ask me.
